“He’s a mix of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag,” said Brian Lara when asked about Prithvi Shaw after the latter’s arrival on the big stage in 2018. Such praise from a cricketer of the West Indian’s standards sums up Shaw’s skill levels. High backlift, crunchy strokeplay and a fearless approach to batting – in short the young Mumbaikar’s batting manual is a recipe for entertainment for any cricket lover. And enthralling people with this gift was something Shaw had begun when he was barely three years old.

“When Virar or in Nagar Palika, they would see him play with the tennis ball, there would be a big crowd,” reveals his father Pankaj Shaw. “Because, the way he plays now is how he played then. His natural game is such. So everyone would say, take him to Mumbai. I didn’t know about cricket at the time.” While Shaw’s talent was a no-brainer for anyone who watched him bat, the fact that he was so young put off several coaches in Mumbai, forcing the father-son duo to revert to Virar. That didn’t deter them, and Shaw’s journey took off from there eventually.

Such was Shaw’s skill that even the great Sachin Tendulkar paid a visit to one of his net sessions to watch the kid bat. “When I was 8 years old was when he (Tendulkar) came to MIG,” gushes Shaw with a big smile. “That’s all I remember. He was watching from somewhere but I didn’t know till he said something. So impressed was the legend that he ended up giving a gift to Shaw. “When he gave me the bat, I was feeling emotional. He wished me good luck and said ‘I hope you score tons of runs with this bat’.”

That he was destined for greater things was always evident but it needed something extraordinary for Shaw to make a statement, given the batting riches of Indian cricket. And that happened in November 2013 when he produced a record-breaking innings of 546 in the Harris Shield match at a tender age of 14. It brought instant fame and Shaw had a jovial incident to tell from that stupendous knock.

“The keeper was saying ‘I’m not coming tomorrow’ and at that time I wasn’t even at 500. I was playing at 300,” he recalls in amusement. “And he wasn’t getting the ball at all. The poor thing kept squatting behind me, waiting for a ball.” The news of this innings gained wide coverage and given the annals of Mumbai’s batting history, the hype around Shaw started to gain momentum. First-class debut was the next step and in 2017, that box too was ticked in style.

Opening the innings for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy semifinal, Shaw’s maiden innings was a dampener but he showed his wares in the next dig, producing a blistering century which provided the impetus for the quick-paced run chase, consequently bagging the Man of the Match award. “I was nervous, because playing Ranji Trophy was an aim, it was a goal.” Shaw also reveals the advice that helped him to overcome the first innings failure.

“Chandu Sir had a message from Sachin Sir at that time. It read ‘Tell him to play how he always plays. Nothing different and it’ll win the game for us’.” says Shaw. He continued to consolidate his first-class career, showing supreme consistency and what stood out was his quick pace of scoring even in this format. The U19 World Cup in 2018 was the obvious next step and Shaw also had the extra baggage of captaincy. However, challenges weren’t new for him.

Even though Shaw didn’t have a jaw-dropping tournament by his standards, he produced most runs by an Indian U19 skipper in a World Cup. That India won the title was obviously the primary achievement. “Obviously, World Cup was a big thing. It was a really big thing for me. I remember in 2008 when Virat [Kohli] was captain, I used to watch all the games. So when I got to know that I’m captaining in the World Cup, I realized that it was something big.”

The transition to India’s senior team happened the same year with Shaw finding himself in the Test squad midway through the England tour before debuting in the subsequent home series against West Indies. Starting with a bang had become his forte and he duly picked up the Man of the Match on Test debut, courtesy a scorching hundred in the first innings. He was also the Man of the Series.

“I had to give a speech there (in the dressing room)”, reveals Shaw. “Actually three speeches. One before my Test debut, one after I got the Man of the Match and then after getting Man of the Series.”
